Substance Use Disorder and Trauma

SUD and trauma frequently coexist, overlap, and influence each other creating a complex and often cyclical relationship that deeply interferes with an individual’s path to recovery. This workshop explores how trauma can increase vulnerability to substance use and highlights trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches across every stage of the recovery continuum. From early intervention to long-term recovery support, the importance of integrated care that is holistic and community-driven is explored.

Training Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation and Recovery: A DBT-Informed Framework for Addiction Fortify Yourself Training

October 9 & 14, 2025

This training will explore how DBT can be effectively integrated into addiction treatment. Participants will examine the robust body of evidence supporting DBT's effectiveness in increasing well-being and reducing relapse rates, supporting sustained recovery, and mitigating the day-to-day impact of stress and emotional upheaval that can undermine progress. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding how DBT can be tailored to meet the needs of clients with co-occurring disorders, and how its principles can be applied across various levels of care—from outpatient programs to residential treatment.

In this training, participants will explore practical strategies for communicating effectively during a crisis, with an emphasis on adapting approaches to meet the unique needs of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism. The training will address ways to prevent crises before they occur, focusing on proactive supports, environmental modifications, and skills that help individuals remain regulated and safe. Participants will also learn steps for supporting recovery after a crisis, assisting both individuals and families in regaining stability and confidence.
